The Last Memory before the silence

Shiva Anoshirvanis exhibition at Galleri Slätten in Malmö, consist of one piece of work with the title "The last memory before the silence". It reflects on the non-linear course of life and memories of the moment when her family moved from Iran to Sweden. The work is based on the story of a golden ring, un item of emotional value and hence taken on this journey. A ring can be seen as a symbol of eternity, of continuous renewal, of the endless circle of life. The new life overwrote the former, overshadowed memories and brought forth a gap in the family. The family never spoke about this moment, it was almost like a mnemonic harddrive with a password you forgot. The work asks us when and how we recuperate parts of our identity from the past and how the individual sense of belonging is linked with society at large.

SWE
Shiva Anoshirvanis utställning på Galleri Slätten i Malmö består av verket “The last memory before the silence”.

Sucker for Power – Haters and Horses
Solo Show
Gislaveds konsthall
31 Aug-5 okt
Opening 30 Aug

Invitation text:

Shiva Anoushirvani's work revolves around the permanent yet shape shifting power structures in society.
In the exhibit ”Sucker for Power – Haters and Horses” she uses equestrian attributes and codes to reconstruct power relations. The stable and the equestrian environment is (metaphorically employed to reflect on deeply entrenched structures of gender and class. The equestrian sphere is just as hierarchic and tough as the outside world, with the difference that there's almost exclusively girls and women occupying the positions (in Sweden).

Shiva Anoushirvani uses film, photography, performance and installations to stage power structures, employing attributes from several different fields. In her previous work "Edge City talk Show" (2012) she staged a talkshow, aiming to reflect the media's view of two nearby neighborhoods in Stockholm. The work reinforces the media's view of the neighborhoods Husby and Kista. These two suburban neighborhoods are socially and economically divided. When the camera observes the daily life that occurs together with the glossy and rigid talkshow-fiction, a contrast is created which explores the significance of the human body in the public sphere. The work was mentioned among others in Tidskrift för genusvetenskap.
Shiva Anoushirvani was born in Tehran/Iran 1979. She has a degree in Fine arts from Goldsmiths University in London and is now based in Stockholm and Malmö.

Linda Fagerström has worked with research and education at Lund's university and Malmö college for the last 15 years and is currently based at Linné university and College of Halmstad. Her major is Art history. She has taught Cultural studies, gender studies and Media & communication studies, and works as a teacher at Österlen school of art and design. Linda is also a secretary in the Swedish art critic association AICA, and as of 2014 chairperson in the State arts counsil's reference group for cultural periodicals.

- It's going to be very interesting for me to exhibit Shiva's work because she highlights gender, power and class in her artistry, as well as resource distribution and inequality in todays and yesterday’s society, globally and locally. Shiva is in her own personal way seeking explanations for people’s behavior and relationships. She poses inquiries into the gendered conditions that produces and reproduces the inequalities permeating society, says Jonas Nilsson, Curator at Gislaved's Art gallery.

Title: Recalling “Not Without My Daughter”

Shiva Anoushirvani will generate a talk based on the recently initiated project “Recalling Memories of Not Without My Daughter” (working title) and will show a text-based piece created just for the evening. “Not Without My Daughter” (1988) is a novel and film (1991). The 60s and 70s generations (& 80s, to a degree) may recall the story. Collecting memories and stories connected to the work with reference to subjects and depictions inherent in the story, Anoushirvani will discuss 90s pop culture, as well as the media and political climate of that time which holds intrigue for those investigating identity politics and racism. What do we remember about this era, and how do we remember? Anoushirvani will also relate to her own memories of the film, referencing a childhood birthday party in which the parents rented the film for children to view. She will also touch upon how her practice is linked to historical flashbacks and myth making; foxhole functions as her point of departure to further develop a piece based on these thematics.

About the Exhibition
It was only when the Egyptian authorities closed down the joint computer networks in an attempt to suppress protests that people seriously began to occupy Cairo’s public spaces. Privatization of the public sphere has changed conditions for the commons. New common space has been created within the private sphere through social media. Democracy’s limits are no longer national but extend globally.“Performing the Common” is a platform for research, where we see art as a way to explore public spaces. For more information about the exhibition and the semanars:

Why such a fuss my friend?

Part 1: COMFORT ZONES

Film och samtal torsdag 26 april kl 18
Konstloungen, Gotlands Konstmuseum
Filmen visas till och med 6 maj.

Why such a fuss my friend?
Part 1: Comfort Zones (2012) 30.01 min.

Om Why such a fuss my friend?
Part 1: Comfort Zones

Why such a fuss my friend?

Why such a fuss my friend?
Part 1: Comfort Zones (2012) 30.01 min.

“Why such a fuss my friend?” looks at the psychology of experiencing and/or relating to large scale conflicts and environmental catastrophes. This film-based project, whose production is funded by Konstnärsnämnden, is initiated through aprox. 30 minutes long film investigating how a relationship is built and mediated between the familiarity of a mediatized global crisis and the day to day of the individual. The film is situated in a space chosen by the interviewee as being secure; within their Comfort Zone. It is from this space of security (ranging from a kitchen at home to a mental institution) that four men discuss their relationship to the crisis that scares them most. The film pose questions as to how one grasps information of this scale, how one can personally relate to global catastrophe as well as what mechanisms one builds and relies on in order to be able to speak to these same issues. During the talk, the cutaror Ellen Suneson will raise issues such as gender, rationality and power structures in relation to the subject matter.
